Habitat Education Center and Wildlife Sanctuary

10 Juniper Road
617-489-5050

On Belmont Hill, just 6 miles northwest of downtown Boston, lies Habitat, an 93-acre urban oasis that has been devoted to environmental education since 1970. Over 2.5 miles of gentle trails wind through deciduous and evergreen forests, across meadows, around two ponds, and along a wetland containing a vernal pool. The visitor center is a brick Georgian-style mansion where monthly art exhibits can be viewed. Outside, there’s a pleasing and calming formal garden. The building and gardens can be reserved on weekends for weddings and other events.

I absolutely love this beautiful forest. Moved to this area to be close....but, this puzzles me... I take my dog on walks, and I am always very respectful of the space, rules etc. He is big, but zéro disruptive. I notice a reluctance to be kind to dogs lately. A bowl of water used to be kept out, but not any more. My dog has cardiac heart failure. I bring him to give him happiness for his remaining days. He walks to the water bowl place every time, not believing its not there. But it isn't... Hope this is temporary.

Beautiful place. Took my 8yo daughter here and even on a hot summer day it was perfect. Saw frogs, turtles and goats, we loved it. Definitely recommend becoming a member.

Great place for a family friendly walk through the woods. There are a number of small trails and loops. As well as a pond with lots of frogs, giant tadpoles (bullfrog) and turtles 🐢. We typically see a lot of chipmunk, some snakes and the occasional wild turkey.

Great wildlife habitat close to the city. Very nice with kids of all ages, and short or longer walks.
