Woods Hole Public Library January News and Events

Film: The Invisible Extinction
Virtual Screening: Saturday, Jan. 14 - Monday, Jan. 16
In-Person Screening, Saturday, Jan. 14 at 2:30pm

The Woods Hole Public Library will be holding both a virtual and in-person screening of the documentary The Invisible Extinction. The virtual screening will be available to watch in the comfort of your home any time between Saturday, Jan. 14 and Monday, Jan. 16. If you would prefer to watch the film at the library, we will hold a screening on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 2:30 pm.

Two globetrotting microbiologists, Gloria Dominguez-Bello and Marty Blaser, race to save our vanishing microbes before it’s too late. The Invisible Extinction joins them on this urgent quest from the USA to Venezuela, China, Israel, and Switzerland, revealing how the overuse of antibiotics, elective C-sections, and processed foods are driving the destruction of our inner ecology, which is happening even faster than climate change. At the same time, the film tells the stories of three patients, in the USA and China, who suffer from life-threatening diseases triggered by microbial loss and are trying experimental treatments that hold hope. As the Covid-19 pandemic hits, Marty pivots to focus on how our microbes may help protect us from the virus and future pandemics, while Gloria spearheads the creation of an international microbe vault to safeguard precious specimens.

To receive the link for the virtual screening of the film, please email us at whpl_mail@clamsnet.org. There is no need to pre-register for the in-person screening of the film.

Travel Talk: Australia
Saturday, Jan. 21
2:30 pm

The Woods Hole Public Library will reinstitute their Travel Talks with a program presented by veteran traveler and speaker Maggie Rioux. She and her husband Terry, both  retired from WHOI, she from the library, and he as dive officer, have given many fascinating talks at the Library, always illustrated by Terry’s photographs, about their frequent world-wide trips This talk is on Saturday, January 21 at 2:30 PM.

This time she will be recounting their trip to Australia with Road Scholar in 2019; this is the first time, post- pandemic they have been able to appear in front of a live audience. The trip was called “Australia at a Slower Pace: An Odyssey Down Under”. The trip which lasted slightly over two weeks, took them to the major cities of Sydney and Melbourne but also to Alice Springs and Cairns and from there to the Great Barrier Reef. Along the way they were introduced to many of Australia’s famous indigenous animals: koalas, penguins, emus, kangaroos, wallabies, and flying foxes, among others. Maggie says “We met lots of interesting people too and ate interesting things.”

Beginning on Thursday, November 17, the group will meet on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of every month. Stay for the entire time, or just stop by for a few stitches. Fiber artists of all experience levels and disciplines are welcome to join in!

Mark your calendars!
Fabric and Fiber Sale
Sunday, February 12

It's time to go through those fabric and yarn stashes! Our Super Bowl Sunday Fabric and Fiber Sale is scheduled for Sunday, February 12, and we need your help to make it a success! If you have fabric, yarn, or notions that are no longer inspiring you, please consider donating them to the Library. Donations can now be dropped off during Library hours, so it is a perfect time to sort through your stash and be honest about those projects you're just not going to get to!

Crafts for Kids
Every week we have a new featured craft in our cozy Children's Room that is set up to be completed either at the library or to take home. After school on Wednesday afternoons, you can also usually find Sadie Leveque on hand to help with a new and fun project. During the month of January, we'll be celebrating our winter bird friends, with DIY bird watching journals, citrus cup bird feeders, and more!
