The Woods Hole Library’s summer Community Art Exhibit and Auction is under way! This year’s medium is sheet music. As in past years, the projects that have come back are astounding!

All items are currently on display in the Library, and will remain on display until the close of our online auction on Monday morning,  August 15. To place a bid and win a piece of Woods Hole creativity, you are encouraged to visit our online auction by clicking on the link below.  All proceeds from the auction will benefit the Library, so bid generously and be sure to tell your friends!

Lassalle Dance Lecture: "Fifty Years at the Yard" with Chloe Jones
Tuesday, August 9
7:00 PM
Chloe Jones, director of The Yard on Martha's Vineyard, will share videos, going behind the scenes with Yard Artists-in-residence, and talk about this season, as well as the Yard’s fifty years of supporting artists and enriching the Vineyard community. We have been fortunate in the last several years to be able to present lectures by many cutting edge, Yard choreographers and dancers. Given that The Yard is now recognized as one of the best summer dance festivals in the country, it is a relationship the Woods Hole Library and dance lecture series treasures.

Author Reading: BJ Atwood-Fukuda
Tuesday, August 16
7:00 PM
Author BJ Atwood-Fukuda will join us for her ninth annual Woods Hole reading, featuring several short pieces and/or excerpts from longer ones. BJ’s work appears in, among other places, the anthologies “Great American Prose Poems from Poe to the Present” and “Free Radicals: American Poets Before Their First Books”. Most recently, parts I and II of her novella, “Nice Piano”, came out in November 2021 and April 2022 on the multimedia site “Witty Partition (wittypartition.org)”.

Social Justice Book Group
Wednesday, August 17
7:00 PM
Our Social Justice Book Group will meet in the Library's courtyard for a discussion of Our History Is The Future: Standing Rock Versus the Dakota Access Pipeline, and the Long Tradition of Indigenous Resistance by Nick Estes. Copies of the book are available to request through the Library or for purchase at Eight Cousins Bookstore.

"Favorite Words" with San Lyman
Wednesday, August 24
4:00 PM
One of Woods Hole’s delightful and zany ladies will be talking about some of her favorite words in a short program at the Woods Hole Public Library on Wednesday, August 24 at 4 PM.

San Lyman has lived in Woods Hole for decades surrounded by friends, family (including her Lineaweaver sons) and words, with a dictionary always open and ready. In her early years she studied other languages as well as English starting with 5 years of Latin, followed by 5 years of Greek, some German and a bit of Spanish, and a “zillion years of French”. Among her many diverse jobs, she has owned two printing businesses, primarily due to her fascination with words. One was Woods Hole’s own Job Shop which she opened in the ‘60s. There she did typesetting and even typeset a whole book.

Come join the throng and listen to San’s words, and catch some of her enthusiasm!

Summer Reading Program
July 1 - August 12
It's not too late to join in on our Summer Reading Program! This year's Summer Reading Program celebrates two of our favorite things: books and pollinators! Readers of all ages are invited to sign up, keep track of titles read, and contribute to our garden mural of all the books we’ve read as a community. The more you read the more you grow, just like a garden! All participants will be given a packet of pollinator-friendly zinnia seeds to plant at home. We can't wait to watch our WHPL community "garden" grow!
