April News and Events

Celebrating Jennifer Gaines
Saturday, April 1
1:00 - 5:30 PM

Jennifer Gaines is retiring from her position as librarian at the Woods Hole Public Library after a 45 year career on Saturday, April 1. (Unfortunately, this is not an April Fool's Joke!) The Library is declaring April 1 to be Jennifer Gaines Day! All are welcomed and encouraged to stop by the library between 1:00 pm and 5:30 pm on Saturday, April 1 to wish Jennifer well and thank her for her many years of service to the library and the community.

Seed Starting Workshop
Monday, April 3
7:00 PM

Josh Leveque, home gardener and owner/operator of Little Harbor Gardens, will present a program, “Successful Seed Starting”, focusing on vegetables and annual flowers, at the Woods Hole Public Library on Monday, 4/3 at 7:00 PM. Josh will talk about key points for success with seed starting, addressing issues of soil, seed choice, planting, germination and fertilization. He will discuss common problems and give recommendations for setting up grow lights at home. Participants will also learn to use a soil block maker, which is available to borrow from the WHPL’s Library of Things.

San Lyman Reminisces about "Cousin Madeline"
Wednesday, April 5
2:00 PM

Local storyteller San Lyman will be telling the tale of “Cousin Madeline” at the Woods Hole Public Library on Wednesday, April 5, at 2 p.m. Cousin Madeline is better known as Madeline Russell, a member of Boston’s elite society (and distant relative of San) who defied cultural expectations with a high-profile divorce and larger-than-life persona in the first half of the 20th century. Intrigued? San promises an “amusing and anecdotal” talk that will travel from Boston to Milton to Naushon Island and beyond!

Virtual Film Screening: The Right to Read
Friday, April 14 - Sunday, April 16

What is more critical to success than the ability to read? Woods Hole Public Library is sponsoring a virtual screening of the new documentary, “The Right to Read” from April 14-16. More than 50% of American adults currently read below a 6th grade level. The film follows teachers, activists, and parents fighting to improve the quality of literacy education in Oakland, California, Jackson, Mississippi, and Virginia Beach, Virginia. When a child can’t read, their chances of incarceration, homelessness, and unemployment increase. That’s why Oakland based NAACP activist Kareem Weaver believes literacy is one of the greatest civil rights issues of our time and is fighting for better reading instruction. “What good is winning the right to vote if we can’t even read the ballot?” Fed up with the bleak reading scores in his own community, Kareem files a petition with the Oakland Unified School District demanding change.

To receive a link to the film, please email us at whpl_mail@clamsnet.org. The screening window will be open from April 14 through April 16. Patrons will be able to access the movie from home at any time during the screening window.

Spring Poetry Walk

Thank you to our community of poets for heeding our call for poetry inspired by our village by the sea! We have compiled the poems into a booklet to take with you as you stroll around the village. Stop by the Library any time during April, which is National Poetry Month, to pick up your book of poems. You may then set out on a long walk, enjoying each poem in the location that inspired the poet, or you may choose to savor just a few at a time. Either way you are in for a delight!

Spice of the Month: Szechuan Peppercorns

We are continuing our flavor explorations by featuring Szechuan peppercorns during the month of April. Stop by the library for a small sample of peppercorns, along with a packet filled with delicious recipes to help you learn all about this unique flavor. The Szechuan Peppercorn (hu? ji?o, ??) is an essential ingredient in the cooking of Szechuan.  When combined with spicy chiles, they create the mala flavor (“numbing-spicy”) that is characteristic of the region. Stop by the library to receive your peppercorns and recipe packet, but don't delay - quantities are limited!

Spring Clean Up
Saturday, April 22
9:00 AM - 11:00 AM

Meet outside the Library with a rake, warm gloves, good spirits, and a willingness to pitch in!

We’ll rake and bag, snip and prune, and clean up the Library grounds to get the place looking ship-shape for the seasons ahead. Many hands make light work!

Thank you in advance for your help and support!
