Wilmington Celebrates its 292nd Birthday!
As Wilmington marks its 292nd anniversary of incorporation on September 25th, why not take some time to learn more about the town’s history? The library’s website has a wealth of resources for a look back at yesteryear. For newcomers, you can start with a brief history of the town written by Terry McDermott, retired Town Curator. Fun fact - Wilmington was created from parts of territory in Woburn, Reading and later, Billerica.
Also, a must read for anyone interested in Yankee legends is the story of Mrs. Hiller. Hiller was known as the “Casket Woman” for the elaborate caskets that she commissioned for herself and her husband in the late nineteenth century. The ghost of Mrs. Hiller was supposedly cited at Market Basket a few years ago!
For “townies” who want to revisit their high school years, you can check out the WHS yearbooks digitized back to the 1940s. The library has digitized the Town Crier newspaper back to the 1950s with keyword access to articles covering politics, sports, local events and more. There are numerous historical photos that give you an idea of what Wilmington looked like before route 93 came through town in the late 1950s.
Make sure to check the library’s calendar of events for local history programs which are an entertaining way to learn about the history of the town and connect with other residents.

Join Branch Manager of AAA North Reading, Jennifer Muniz, and Assistant Branch Manager, Kimberly MacInnis, as they help us prepare to acquire a Real ID. Real ID is going into effect May 3, 2023, which is rapidly approaching. Real ID requires multiple documents that tends to be confusing, and during this presentation Jennifer & Kimberly will explain what is going to happen and when, detail the documents needed to get a Real ID, and answer any questions. They will also bring license applications and Real ID checklists.
