With temperatures expected to soar to over 90 degrees this weekend, most of us will be struggling to deal with the heat, but for some people—like elders—the heat is a threat to their physical wellbeing.

During hot, humid weather, older adults are at risk for more than just being uncomfortable. Heat-related illnesses can actually prove to be fatal. As a person ages, their body has less of an ability to respond to extended exposure to extreme heat.

Individuals who are extremely overweight, take certain medications, drink alcohol excessively, or have chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, heart, or circulatory diseases are more susceptible to heat stress or heat stroke.

Individuals should be on the lookout for early signs that heat is negatively affecting an older adult. Such indicators include mild discomfort, thirst, lack of energy, and a loss of appetite. If a person experiences these symptoms, they should find an air-conditioned space where they can cool off.

Dizziness, weakness, rapid heartbeat, nausea, diarrhea, chest pain, vomiting, and cramps are more serious signs of heat-related illness. Family members and caregivers should watch for these signs during the summer heat. If they do occur, medical assistance should be sought.

The following are helpful hints to try and prevent any heat-related problems when the weather is extremely hot:

Wear lightweight, light-colored and loose-fitting clothing, and a hat when outside
Avoid hot and heavy meals and instead choose cold sandwiches and salads
Drink sufficient amounts of water as well as eating fresh fruits and vegetables for hydration
Stay indoors when it is extremely hot and lower your shades or close the curtains to block out the sun
Avoid any strenuous exercise or activities
Spend time during the day in an indoor, public place (library, senior center, mall) that is air conditioned if your own home is too uncomfortable
Be a good neighbor. Check on family, friends, and neighbors, especially the elderly, those who live alone, those with medical conditions, those who may need additional assistance, and those who may not have air conditioning.
Purchase a fan or air-conditioner to help on those hot days when heat can spell trouble.
