What’s happening?

The Weymouth Water Department will be conducting a semi-annual Water Main Flushing Program in North Weymouth starting on Monday, April 25, 2022 and continuing on to about Friday, May 20, 2022. Flushing of water mains will be conducted between the hours of 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM.  The program will be completed in phases to minimize any potential impacts to water quality and service.  Water mains will be flushed by releasing water from selected hydrants throughout the North Weymouth section of Town.

What are the benefits of flushing water mains?

Water main flushing is an effective method of improving drinking water quality and is an integral component of a water utility's distribution system maintenance program.

Are there any short-term impacts from water main flushing?

Water main flushing can cause temporary reductions in water pressure and discolored water from increased levels of dissolved iron.  Discolored water due to increased levels of dissolved iron may not be aesthetically pleasing, but according to the Environmental Protection Agency (E. P. A.), it is not a public health threat.  The Weymouth Water Department is making every effort to minimize potential impacts from the program and will closely monitor water quality and water pressure while flushing mains.

Should North Weymouth water customers take special precautions?

In general, Weymouth water customers should minimize water usage during the hours the water mains are being flushed. Any customers experiencing dirty water should run a cold water tap, closest to their water meter, for just a couple minutes. Some customers such as hospitals and medical facilities, and businesses that use water in their manufacturing or cleaning process, may want to more closely monitor their water quality and water pressure while the flushing program is underway. Residents should check their water before washing clothes.

Who can I contact for more information?

The Town of Weymouth cannot be responsible for any damage incurred as a result of this activity. If you have questions or concerns regarding the Water Main Flushing Program, please contact the Water Department at (781)337-5100, Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:30 A.M. - 3:30 P. M.
