On June 2, 2022, Town of Upton was one of 86 municipalities and school districts across the Commonwealth to be awarded a grant under the Community Compact Cabinet Municipal Fiber Grant program.  The Town of Upton received $237,500 to connect various town and school facilities under the first year of this new grant program.

Announcing the awards in Taunton, Governor Baker said “The delivery of government services, from public safety response to data security, is increasingly reliant upon strong and cohesive internet infrastructure,” said Governor Charlie Baker. “This new Community Compact Cabinet program is the latest example of our Administration’s commitment to partnering with cities and towns to better serve residents, and we are proud to support their efforts to strengthen their municipal networks.”

Currently, each Town building has an individual internet connection and maintaining all of the internet connections, VPNs and firewalls requiring a significant amount of IT support. The Town worked collaboratively with the Mendon Upton Regional School District IT Director to connect various Town and MURSD buildings, as well as including Blackstone Valley Regional Technical High School, with the goal of improving internet service and overall network security while reducing IT infrastructure and support costs.
