Town of Townsend - Military Band Concert June 9

The Townsend Military Band will open its 2022 Thursday evening concert series on the Townsend

Common on June 9th.  Weather permitting, the band will play a concert from the band stand on the Common each Thursday between 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. through at least August 11th.  The Townsend Military Band is managed by Betty Mae Tenney of Townsend and conducted by Thomas Souza of Chelmsford.   Mr. Souza is the Brandeis University Wind Ensemble Director, the head of the Nashua, New Hampshire, Public School system Music Department, and the Band Director at the Fairgrounds Middle School in Nashua.  Mr. Souza plans to feature well-known show tunes, marches, patriotic music, and children’s music in the Townsend Military Band’s Thursday evening concerts.

The concerts are funded by the Town of Townsend.  Lawn parties hosted by local organizations which feature food, activities for children, and other assorted tables are held in conjunction with these concerts.  Area residents of all ages are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs or blankets to the Townsend Common on Thursday evening so they may sit and enjoy the good music and the company of friends and neighbors as well as a variety of food and beverages which will be offered for sale.

Townsend Scout groups will host the lawn party at the Townsend Military Band’s Thursday, June 9th, concert on the Townsend Common.

Boy Scout Troop #10 will be selling grilled hot dogs, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, and watermelon as well as cold bottled water and assorted flavors of soda.

Pack #11 Cub Scouts will be offering Country Meat Beef Sticks for sale and running several games for children attending the concert to play.

Townsend Girl Scouts will be selling ice cream and lemonade.

Ken Arsenault, former Hawthorne Brook Middle School Band Director, will be conducting the

Townsend Military Band at its June 9th concert on the Townsend Common

The band will open its concert at 7:30 p.m. by playing Parker’s “American Legion March” and “The Lion King” arranged by Higgins.  Lang’s arrangement of “A Trumpeter’s Lullaby”, Goldman’s “The Chimes of Liberty March”, and “Bandology” by Osterling will be performed.  The “Sea Songs” by Vaughan Williams and “The Barnstormer March” arranged by Beyer will be included in the first portion of the program.

Following intermission Sousa’s “Washington Post March” will be played.  “The Italian in Algiers” transcribed by Tobani and “The Boys of the Old Brigade March” by Chambers will be performed before the band concludes its concert at 9:30 by playing the “Star Spangled Banner”.
