Its fall again, which means pumpkins, hot cider, and beautiful foliage. It's when folks can see Townsend at its best, but also means the hours of raking and leaf clean up are almost upon us.

Leaf litter is more than just a back-breaking chore, it can also lead to stormwater nutrient runoff into our streams and waterways.

Here are 3 leaf waste tips to help reduce nutrients run off in waterways and support your yard to boot!

Use your lawn mower to mulch leaves in place! This puts valuable nutrients back into your soil and saves you from pesky raking!
Gather leaves and other “yard waste” into a compost pile, let overwinter and decompose, and then use as fertilizer next growing season. The average cost to fertilize a lawn can range from $200 to $500 a year. Save you money; waste not, want not.
Offer your leaves to a neighbor who may be able to use them for composting. One person’s trash is another’s treasure.
And failing this, make sure to properly dispose of leaves by bringing them to the town recycling center facility at 33 Greenville Rd. Leaf litter drop off is free year-round for residents.

Enjoy the season!
