Police Chief James McIntyre and Fire Chief Matthew Grafton report that an investigation into a suspicious item revealed there was no danger to the public on Tuesday morning.
On Tuesday, Sept. 27, at approximately 7:22 a.m., Stoneham Police and Fire Dispatch was notified of a suspicious item that was found at the Mobil Gas Station, 2 South St.
Police and fire personnel responded to the scene, and based upon the appearance of the item and its location at the gas station, assistance from the Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad was requested.
Portions of Route 28, South Street, North Border Road and Fellsway were closed while police, fire and the bomb squad responded.
At approximately 9:30 a.m., the Bomb Squad determined the item did not pose a threat, the roadways and area were reopened.
“I want to thank the residents and business owners in the area for their patience, as we had to close streets and evacuate nearby homes to ensure that there was no threat to public safety,” said Chief McIntyre. “Our investigation into this item is now complete, and I am pleased to report there is no danger.”
“We are grateful the Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad along with other State Troopers responded quickly with their state of the art equipment, and were able to determine the item was not a threat,” said Chief Grafton. “I’d also like to acknowledge all the Stoneham responders from Fire, Police, Dispatch, and Cataldo Ambulance who took appropriate actions to ensure the safety of our residents, as well as mutual aid from Wakefield Fire who covered the Stoneham Fire Station.”
