Town of Rockland Newsletter - May 2022

From: Town of Rockland
May 28, 2022

At Town Hall, we understand that communication with our residents is important. As a new way to connect, we are launching this monthly newsletter as a six month pilot. It is a resource to keep people informed about Rockland Town Government and its inner workings, especially our water and sewer departments.

Another Advancement in Wastewater Treatment

In our continuing efforts to provide residents with news about all that is being done to improve our wastewater services, Rockland is going to be replacing its Digestive Boiler whose primary purpose is to treat and reduce the amount of wastewater solids that might otherwise be destined to be dumped at sea, in landfills, or burnt in incinerators.

Massachusetts DEP, the USEPA, and other state and other federal agencies are now using the term “Water Resource Recovery Facility to refer to Wastewater Treatment Facilities. The term “Water Resources Recovery Facility” acknowledges their ability to produce clean water, recover nutrients (such as phosphorus and nitrogen), and reduce dependence on fossil fuels through the production and use of renewable energy.

On May 2d, Town Metting appropriated $226,139 for the Wastewater Treatment Plant to purchase and install new effluent meters, remediate Infiltration and Inflow issues in the sewer collection system, and engineering services related to those efforts to help comply with various federal and state permits.
