Town of Plymouth - Water Street Sewer Interceptor Replacement Project Update

From: Town of Plymouth
March 10, 2023

The Town of Plymouth’s Department of Public Works (“DPW”) seeks to notify residents and visitors of an update regarding the sewer system replacement project on Water Street.

On March 10, 2023, the project contractor and engineering consultants continued to monitor the area and found no additional movement from the initial settlement identified on March 7, 2023.

Engineering consultants utilized enhanced Ground Penetrating Radar (“GPR”) on the morning of March 10, 2023. Engineering consultants assessed the results of the monitoring and determined that the surveyed area of Chilton Street, and Water Street from Memorial Drive to Chilton Street, did not show evidence of large voids or spaces in the subsurface.

Based upon the evidence and investigation made by the engineering consultants, Town officials determined that the public right of way is safe to reopen to the public. Furthermore, affected businesses and residents are allowed to reoccupy structures.

The temporary detour pattern has been lifted as of Friday, March 10, 2023. Water Street from the Rotary to Brewster Street has been reopened for through traffic. Chilton Street has been reopened for through traffic.

Town officials were notified of settlement, in the vicinity of the project, on the morning of March 7, 2023. Between March 7, 2023, to March 10, 2023, Town officials, the project contractor, and engineering consultants investigated potential impacts and addressed areas of immediate concern.

The Town and the Contractor will make every effort possible to minimize disturbances to residents, businesses, pedestrians, and motorists in the Water Street area throughout the duration of this project.

During construction, please expect to be inconvenienced by traffic delays, detours, uneven/settling trenches, parking restrictions, and elevated noise levels. Please follow the detour signs that are installed along the project area. Traffic detours will be modified as construction progresses towards the State Pier. The Town appreciates the community’s patience and support during this project, which will improve the resilience of the Town’s sewer system.
