The Town of Hanover is pleased to announce it has been awarded $36,700 through the Commonwealth’s Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP) Planning Grant Program. These funds will be used to update the Town’s Hazard Mitigation Plan and also assess and plan for the Town’s vulnerability to the impacts of climate change. This is a joint endeavor by the Hanover Community Development and Municipal Inspections Department and the Fire/Emergency Management Department.

The MVP Planning Grant offers funding to municipalities that wish to assess their vulnerability and prepare for climate change impacts, build community resilience, and receive designation from the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) as an MVP Community. Currently, the Town of Hanover is one of only a handful of communities across the Commonwealth, and the only community in Plymouth County not to have this designation. MVP Communities are eligible for future MVP Action Grant funding to implement the priority actions identified through the planning process.

Hazard Mitigation Plans form the basis for a community's long-term strategy to reduce disaster losses. Hazard Mitigation breaks the cycle of disaster damage, reconstruction, and repeated damage. Hanover’s current plan was developed in 2014 and is out of date. Funds from this grant program will be utilized to engage in and complete the process needed to update this plan. The Town of Hanover uses the Hazard Mitigation Plan as its basis for formulating its Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan.

Both of these projects will be completed concurrently with the process taking approximately one year to complete.
