Annual Local Census

The Town Clerk conducts an Annual Census for the Town of Chelmsford. The mailing goes out in January. With more and more residents working outside the home, census-by-mail assures that all households will be contacted. The information collected is name, date of birth, and occupation. Voters are required to return the form annually to retain their active status on the voter list.

The Board of Registrars is required by State Statute to verify and update the name, address, age and occupation of all residents in preparation for the Annual Street List. Compliance with this State requirement provides proof of residence to protect voting rights, veterans’ bonus, housing for the elderly and related benefits. Sometimes people need to prove prior residence for a particular period. By answering the census, you will create the record of your period of residency in Chelmsford.

New residents are requested to fill out a census soon after you move into Chelmsford. The census mailing also includes reminders about upcoming elections and annual dog licensing. Applications will NOT be included with the census. The deadline to license your dog each year is February 28.

The information collected during the census is used by several town departments, including in carrying out their mission for Chelmsford. The Town Clerk uses the information to update and verify voting lists and to produce the List of Residents.

BLANK CENSUS FORM

The census form DOES NOT register you as a voter. If you wish to register to vote, you must fill out a voter registration form and file it with the Town Clerk. If you are a registered voter, failure to answer this annual census may result in the voter’s name being removed from the voting list. Failure to answer the census will cause you to be listed as an "inactive voter" and require you to show proof of continuous residency in Chelmsford in order to reactivate your voting status. This will force you to step out of line at the polling place and slow down your voting experience. Please sign and return your census.

Federal Census

The United States conducts a Federal Census every 10 years, as mandated by Article 1, Section 2 in our Constitution.  As a result of the 2020 US Federal Census, Chelmsford's population growth required our precinct lines to be redrawn, with the addition of 2 precincts.  We previously had 9 precincts and now we have 11; two of which are split precincts to match up with the district lines, drawn by the state.

The 2020 Federal Census marks the 24th time that the country has counted its population since 1790.

Chelmsford’s 2020 population = 36,392

This is a 7.7% increase from the 2010 Census population of 33,802.
