Cyanobacteria Advisory For Lower Mill Pond and Gristmill Dam

On September 13, 2022 the Brewster Health Department, per MA Department of Public Health Cyanobacteria in Recreational Water Board of Health Guidance 2022, posted a Cyanobacteria Health Advisory at the Lower Mill Pond Dam at the Gristmill location due to a visible algal bloom indicative of elevated levels of Cyanobacteria. As a precautionary measure, a second posting was erected at the Lower Mill Pond Beach Association kayak launch area through the collaborative efforts of the Brewster Ponds Coalition and the Beach Association. Testing of the pond will continue on a weekly basis to monitor existing cyanobacteria levels. Until further notice, people and pets should avoid contact with any pond water where a visible algal bloom is present. Fall Water System Flushing

System flushing of the Town’s water system east of Underpass and Foster Roads will begin Thursday, September 22. The first area to be flushed will be from the standpipes at Rt. 137 and Underpass Rd. to Wells #1 & #2 off Freemans Road.   Roadways involved are Rt. 137 from Underpass Rd. to Jonathans Way; Freemans Road from Rt 137 to Rt. 6; Millstone Rd. from Rt. 137 to Moss Ln., including all side streets. There are four additional phases to complete flushing maintenance for the east side of town, which is expected to take approximately 8 to 10 weeks.

The Department will flush the system during the hours of 8:00 am to 4:00 pm Monday through Friday throughout the Fall period.   Signboards will be posted on the major roads in the area notifying the residents of flushing.  The Department suggests residents of the posted area limit daytime water use, if possible, and check the hot and cold water for clarity before doing laundry or for other domestic purposes. Water clarity should return quickly after flushing has ended each day.  Some areas may be affected more than others and customers in areas immediately surrounding the posted areas may also be affected.  Department customers west of Underpass Rd. should not be significantly affected by discolored water during this flushing.

We apologize for any inconvenience experienced and appreciate the continued cooperation of Brewsters' water customers in this effort to maintain the highest quality potable water possible. If there are any questions regarding this program or if you have any water quality critical equipment, such as medical (dialysis etc.) or professional (dental or medical etc.) please call the Brewster Water Department at 508-896-5454 during regular office hours for details.
