Shared Streets and Spaces Grant Awards

The Bedford Select Board is pleased to announce that the Town of Bedford has been awarded multiple grants from the state’s Shared Streets and Spaces Program. These Fiscal Year 2023 grants total $92,350, and construction is likely to occur in calendar year 2023.

- $42,350 will support a midblock crossing on North Road at Bedford Farms. The project will include the installation a crosswalk, as well as “rapid flash beacons” that will alert drivers to the presence of pedestrians at the crossing.

-$50,000 will fund safety improvements around schools. Five permanently-mounted, solar-charging speed feedback signs will be installed around Davis, Lane, and John Glenn Middle Schools to encourage motorists to slow down on approaches to the schools, and remind drivers of the legal school zone speed limit. This grant will also support a pair of rapid flash beacons at the Fawn Circle/Springs Road/Gould Road intersection to improve safety at the crossing, a proposal that is part of the Town’s Pedestrian & Bicycle Master Plan to facilitate safer access to the Lane School.

Safety enhancements in the vicinity of Willson Park and around schools are goals of the Select Board. We are appreciative of the Department of Public Works’ efforts to prepare these successful grant applications, and we recognize the advocacy of many Bedford residents in support of these safety improvements. We would also like to thank Bedford’s legislative delegation and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation for their roles in support of this local funding opportunity.
