This Week at the Jones Library

There is a new vibrancy in town as the college students have returned, fall routines are starting, and our academic community is lively once again after a relaxing summer.  Things are picking up at the library too - check out all the news and events we've highlighted below!  And don't forget to visit our website for even more events, news, services, and materials.

Holiday Closing

The Jones Library and branches will be closed on Sunday, September 4 and Monday, September 5 in observance of Labor Day.  Our website is available 24/7 with a wide range of online resources and materials to stream and download, so visit us there!

Teen Lounge

Friday, September 9 from 3:30 - 5:00 pm

Stop by the Woodbury Room after school on Fridays for Teen Lounge! Teen Lounge is a place to unwind after a long week with some anime, board games, and crafts. Come hang out with friends and make some new ones! This program is for ages 11-17.

Library Magazine Giveaway

Friday, September 9 from 9:30 am - 4:30 pm
Saturday, September 10 from 9:30 am - 4:30 pm

Calling all teachers, craftspeople, and anyone looking for magazines for projects!  We will be holding our fall giveaway of discarded magazines on Friday and Saturday.  Find these free issues under the tent on the library's front lawn.

Please note:  We are giving away our magazines only - please don't bring your old magazines to swap!

Sunday Hours Resume

Summer is over, the academic year has begun, and Sunday hours are resuming at the Jones Library as of September 11.  The Jones Library will be open on Sundays from 1:00 - 5:15 pm.

In the Burnett Gallery

For the next few months, you can enjoy two different Burnett Gallery experiences - virtual and in-person!

This month's Burnett Gallery exhibit in the library features the work of Jen Delgado.  Her pieces utilize nature along with surrealist images.  Learn more!

Virtual Burnett Gallery

Check out September's online exhibit, entitled Refugees, Resistance, and Resilience.  This exhibit features work by Simone Alter-Muri, Harriet Diamond, Judy (Na Omi) Shintani, and Viki Gable.  View the exhibit.

Volunteer ESL Tutors Needed

The ESL Center is looking for instructional tutors for adult immigrants from a variety of countries. Volunteers should be fluent English speakers, but no prior teaching experience or second language skills are required. A user-friendly teacher’s guide makes it easy for tutors to plan and deliver two one-hour lessons a week. The scheduling of sessions is flexible, and volunteers are asked to make a (minimum) nine-month commitment to their student. Training is online and volunteers can work through it at their own pace. For more info, go to www.joneslibrary.org/tutor or contact ESL Coordinator Lynne Weintraub at 413 259-3093 or esl@joneslibrary.org.

Little Kid Yoga

Coming soon! Join us for some gentle stretching and playful yoga! This program is for kids ages 0-5 and their caregivers. No registration required!  Join us on Monday, September 12, 19, and 26 from 10 - 10:45 am in the Woodbury Room.

Sing with Your Baby

Save the date!

Our popular Sing with Your Baby program with Wendy Plummer is starting back up on Tuesday, September 13 and runs through November 1! Babies from birth through age 5 and their caregivers are invited to join us for songs and fingerplays outside in the tent.

In the event of weather, this program will be cancelled. Please check our website for updates, or contact the Kids Room at 413-259-3091.

Contemporary Book Club

We are pleased to announce the return of the Contemporary Book Club. This popular book club meets on the second Thursday of the month in the Amherst Room. Our first meeting will be on Thursday, October 13, 7:00 - 8:00 PM, where we will discuss the novel Unsettled Ground, by Claire Fuller. Copies are available to borrow at the Jones Reference Desk. All are welcome.
