This Week at the Jones Library

Fall officially arrives this week, but recent cool evenings have already paved the way for a glorious New England autumn.  Fall programming is underway at the library, with great events in the works as well.  Take a look at the news and events we have highlighted below, and visit our website to access resources, discover great books, and learn our latest news!

Amherst Reads Banned Books

Saturday, September 17 from 3:00 - 4:30 pm

Stop by this afternoon as we kick off Banned Books Week with a reading event that celebrates banned books and shows our support for libraries and intellectual freedom.   State Representative Mindy Domb and State Senator Jo Comerford will be joined by local authors, elected officials, community residents, and local teens to read excerpts from their favorite banned books.  Among the books on display will be novels by Salman Rushdie. As encouraged by PEN America, attendees may choose to read from his works, with videos of those readings posted to #StandWithSalman. This program is appropriate for both teens and adults.

Little Kid Yoga

Monday, September 19 & 26 from 10 - 10:45 am

Join us for some gentle stretching and playful yoga in the Woodbury Room! This program is for kids age 0-5 and their caregivers. No registration required!

Ukulele Play Along

Monday, September 19 from 7:00 - 7:45 pm

Grab your ukulele and play along - because playing your ukulele is more fun when you do it with others.  We'll be focusing on 3 and 4 chord songs, with lyrics and chords provided on screen.  Participants will be muted, so don't worry about how you sound.

Follow the link to join via Zoom!

This program is made possible due to support from the Friends of the Jones Libraries.

Sing with Your Baby

Tuesday, September 20 from 10:30 - 11:00 am

Our popular Sing with Your Baby program with Wendy Plummer is starting back up on Tuesday, September 20th and will run through November 1! Babies from birth through age 5 and their caregivers are invited to join us for songs and fingerplays outside in the tent.

In the event of weather, this program will be cancelled. Please check our website for updates, or contact the Kids Room at 413-259-3091.

Teen Lounge

Friday, September 23 from 3:30 - 5:00 pm

Stop by the Woodbury Room after school on Fridays for Teen Lounge! There will be crafts, games, shows, and good times. Come hang out with friends and make some new ones!  No reservation required. This program is for ages 11-17.

Reading the Classics

Our virtual classics book discussions continue this fall!  Led by Amherst College professor Ilan Stavans,  this series is a collaboration of the Jones Library, the New York Public Library, and Restless Books, and together we explore various world literature classics.

The next online discussion in the fall series will be held on Tuesday, October 11 at 7:00 pm via Zoom.  Join us to discuss The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster.
