VIRTUAL: JOB SEARCH HELP -- Creating An Edge To Land Your Next Job (*RR)

Getting hired for a job opportunity often depends on small details that make the difference between you and other candidates. This presentation will discuss those areas in which a small improvement can have a big payoff, especially in today's world in which communication by Zoom or other video technologies is now common. By becoming more aware of how you present yourself, both in person and online, and what you communicate when you interact with others, you will gain an all-important edge and make yourself a more desirable candidate for the position you want. Led by Randall Warniers, a freelance editor, book designer, and book publisher who spent nearly two decades in the world of publishing as managing editor of a research journal at MIT Lincoln Laboratory. He is also an instructor in 19th-century British literature at Acton-Boxborough Community Education, and the coordinator of the Films at Fowler movie program at the Concord Library. For many years he was a facilitator and member of the leadership team at Acton Networkers.

VIRTUAL: The History of Halloween (*RR)

Explore the cross cultural origins of Halloween and how it has translated into the month long extravaganza which features haunted houses, hayrides and so much more. Led by Jo Ann Tufo, a historian and American History teacher. Tufo (aka "The Duchess of Doom") specializes in American cultural practices and celebrations. She served as director of a large "Haunted Mansion" Halloween event in Philadelphia for a decade, and promises to share a few inside tricks of the trade as well.

VIRTUAL: The History of Walt Disney World's Hollywood Studios (*RR)

Disney’s Hollywood Studios is the Florida park that has undergone the most changes since it opened in 1989. Some have been positive, some not as much. Examine at the original vision for this park and how it has evolved over the years. Then, explore the significant additions to the park, including Toy Story Land and Galaxy’s Edge, and the park as it is today. Led by Valerie Gugala, a historical presenter and lecturer specializing in Abraham and Mary Lincoln, presidential history, the Victorian era, and all things Disney. She has spent 40+ years researching the Lincoln family and has been performing as and speaking about Mrs. Lincoln for more than 25. Gugala is a co-founder of “Mary Lincoln’s Coterie,” a group dedicated to the memory and legacy of Mary Lincoln, which holds lectures and discussions every month, and, since 2001, has hosted a symposium every summer in Springfield, Illinois

The Massachusetts Library Collaborative's 50+ Job Seekers Group meets on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month, from 9:30am to 11:30am, via Zoom. If you are unemployed and actively looking, underemployed, seeking a new career direction, re-entering the job market after a long employment gap, or recently retired and looking for your "Encore Career", this networking group program is perfect for you! Remember, 85% of jobs are found through networking! Join us in a professional forum for networking with peers in a safe and comfortable environment conducive to developing new relationships and developing skills and strategies to help in your career transition. Each meeting features a new topic. Meetings include a presentation and hands-on workshop on topics relevant to career transition, guest speakers, access to hiring managers, small group breakout rooms to network, and 1-on-1 coaching guidance. Participating on a regular basis will give job seekers the many tools and strategies needed for a successful job search. Each biweekly meeting is facilitated by Deborah Hope, MBA, PCIC, an experienced executive career coach.

VIRTUAL: Inside Look At International Space Station's Bishop Airlock From The Man Who Engineered It (*RR)

What do astronauts on board the International Space Station (ISS) do with their trash? Do they recycle? Explore the old ways of getting rid of trash on the ISS as well as new ways that have been recently developed. The Bishop Airlock has updated the ISS in more ways than just taking out the trash. Join Solar System Ambassador Lorie Hammerstrom and Aerospace Engineer/Spacecraft Designer, Builder and Operator Brock Howe, who actually helped design the Bishop Airlock, to learn about some amazing new technology added to the ISS. 

HYBRID: The Armchair Detectives Mystery Book Group -- Hotel Paradise

Do you love a good mystery? Join the library's Book Club, "The Armchair Detectives!" A once fashionable, now faded resort. A derelict house full of secrets, uninhabited for almost half a century. The death of a twelve-year-old girl forty years in the past. And another girl who becomes obsessed with this death.  Copies of the book are available at the Front Desk.   We will be meeting in person, but will have ZOOM up for anyone who can't make it to the Library. VIRTUAL: Going To Extremes -- A Travel Journalist's Tour of the Globe's Most Adventurous Outposts (*RR)

Award-winning adventure travel journalist Peter Mandel will share his most extreme travel experiences -- surviving a coup in Ecuador, visiting a 'city' of penguins at the South Pole, fishing for piranha on Brazil's Rio Negro, floating in the Goodyear Blimp, sailing on an Arctic icebreaker, camping in the African bush, and kayaking to the Statue of Liberty. Mandel, who hunts for his stories and photos in the world's far corners, will also deliver the scoop on how travel turns to prose on today's magazine and newspaper pages. Mandel is the author of ten books, and written for The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, The Los Angeles Times, and National Geographic Kids.

VIRTUAL: Afrofuturism with 'Black Panther' Author Sheree Renée Thomas (*RR)

Join Sheree Renée Thomas, author of Black Panther: Panther's Rage, as she discusses the exciting innovations and new creations in Afrofuturism, a global artistic and social movement that uses the creative arts, science, technology, and philosophy to imagine -- and create -- future worlds where African-descended peoples and cultures can live and thrive. Thomas has been a major contributor to the Afrofuturism genre for the past three decades and sees the work as a vibrant space for collaboration and exploration. Thomas is an award-winning fiction writer, poet, and editor. Her work is inspired by myth and folklore, natural science and the genius of the Mississippi Delta. She is a co-editor of Africa Risen: A New Era of Speculative Fiction and Trouble the Waters: Tales of the Deep Blue. Her fiction collection, Nine Bar Blues: Stories from an Ancient Future was a finalist for the 2021 Ignyte, Locus, and World Fantasy Awards. She is the editor of The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, associate editor of Obsidian, and also edited the two-time World Fantasy Award-winning groundbreaking anthologies, Dark Matter: A Century of Speculative Fiction from the African Diaspora and Dark Matter: Reading the Bones.

VIRTUAL: The Art Of The Italian Renaissance (*RR)

Explore the three phases of the Italian Renaissance; the proto-Renaissance in the work of Giotto, Duccio, and the Lorenzetti brothers; the Renaissance as illustrated in the painting of Masaccio, Piero della Francesca, and Botticelli and the sculpture of Donatello; while Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael will illustrate the High Renaissance. The Venetian Renaissance style will be illustrated in paintings by Giorgione, Bellini, and Titian. Led by Martha Chiarchiaro, owner of Seeing History, who has brought history to life through the art of the times for more than 30 years. She received her Masters’ degree in the History of Art from Williams College and provides a variety of art history presentations at the Worcester Art Museum, libraries, senior centers, and a variety of garden clubs. 

VIRTUAL: Adjusting The Sails -- Women Who Took "Dis" Out Of "disABILITY" (*RR)

Explore the lives of some inspiring women who conquered obstacles to excel in business, education, science, and social reform. Overcoming bias based on gender can be an overwhelming task but these women also had to smash the glass ceiling while living with a variety of challenges related to physical and mental disadvantages. The presentation covers the lives and legacies of women such as Helen Keller; Senator Tammy Duckworth; Claudia Gordon, Esq.; poet Amanda Gorman; and many more. Led by historian Jo Ann Tufo, a writer, lecturer and performer who has over 30 years of experience. Her realistic and haunting portrayals of various historic figures have delighted audiences for more than three decades all over the United States. Tufo has also taught at Coastal Carolina University/OLLI Program since 2012 focusing on a variety of subjects, including the Colonial, Civil War, World War I, World War II and Vietnam eras. Many of her programs focus on the noteworthy contributions of women. 

VIRTUAL: Frederick Law Olmsted - Designer Of Central Park, Prospect Park & Boston's Emerald Necklace (*RR)

Central Park, Prospect Park, and Boston's Emerald Necklace are popular today because of the way Frederick Law Olmsted designed them. He believed in the wonder of nature as a remedy to the stress of urban life. He also believed in free access for all. In this year, the 200th anniversary of his birth, discover the trademarks of Olmsted’s design and see how these are enjoyed today. Led by Roxanne Zimmer, Ph.D., who runs the Community Horticulture program at the Cornell Cooperative Extension in Suffolk County, New York.

Enjoy a screening of one of Hollywood's newest DVD releases – “Top Gun: Maverick.” After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy's top aviators, Pete Mitchell is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. Join us for snacks and a movie on the big screen as we watch Hocus Pocus 2! Hocus Pocus 2 is rated PG and run time is 1 hour and 43 minutes.  This event is open to teens in grades 6-12 only. Two young women accidentally bring back the Sanderson Sisters to modern day Salem and must figure out how to stop the child-hungry witches from wreaking havoc on the world.

Tiny Tykes is SPOOKTACULAR this week! Join us for a Halloween-themed story time designed for young children ages 0 to 18 months. Older siblings are always welcome to join in. Join us for a fun session of stories, songs, fingerplays, instruments, and gentle movement that help build early literacy skills. Babies experience the sounds and structure of language through rhythm, rhyme and repetition.
