Resilient Stormwater Action Plan Update : Property Owner Webinar Series Kicks Off On February 27th

From: Town of West Stockbridge
January 23, 2023

Attention, Residents! Richmond and West Stockbridge are completing a collaborative action plan to proactively reduce flooding, improve climate readiness, and address stormwater impacts across the two communities. The Resilient Stormwater Action and Implementation Plan will identify and prioritize short- and long-term flood reduction projects across the communities - and position the Towns to receive future state funding.

Thanks to the 85 survey respondents who already helped out by identifying locations with a history of flooding and sharing how they have addressed flooding on their properties. Special thanks to the 17 people who reported already using nature-based solutions on their properties!

Interested in learning more about nature-based solutions? Attend two informational webinars happening Monday, February 27, and Wednesday, March 29 (from 6:30 – 7:15pm). These webinars will provide information geared towards riverfront and lakefront homeowners – but relevant to all - about reducing flooding and supporting a more climate resilient community.

Register now for the February webinar (2/27) at this link: https://tinyurl.com/Feb27flood.

Survey results are being used to inform modeling of flooding issues associated with existing infrastructure and future climate conditions. Nature-based solutions to mitigate flooding will also be assessed within the flood model.

Your input on the draft plan and possible solutions will be needed later in the spring, so stay tuned for further updates.

Did You Know?
In Berkshire County, the frequency of one-inch or greater rain events has increased. Flooding occurs where increased rainfall amounts saturate the soil and cannot be fully absorbed. Recent intense storms have washed out roads and increased flooding on streets and private properties. When rain or snow melt runs off of hard surfaces such as asphalt, pavement and roofs, it picks up pollutants such as sediment, motor oil, and dog waste along the way. Stormwater is often channeled to the nearest water body resulting in quickly rising river levels and increased pollutant loads. Greater stream volume and velocity results in bank erosion that can lead to loss of land, and higher flows can overwhelm or damage road-stream crossings.

The project is currently modeling the flooding issues associated with existing infrastructure and future climate conditions and identifying potential solutions, informed by field assessments and your survey responses. Use of nature-based solutions to mitigate flooding will be assessed within the flood model and more community input will be sought in the spring.
