Mayor Broder’s Office is pleased to announce outdoor dining is returning to Melrose as the City is once again supporting what has become a popular practice adopted by many food-service businesses during the pandemic.
First authorized in Massachusetts in 2021, expanded outdoor dining is still a relatively new initiative made possible by an executive order issued by Governor Baker in 2020, and renewed in 2021. The order has permitted municipalities to use an expedited process to approve temporary permits for new or expanded outdoor dining and alcohol service. The rules have since been extended through April 1, 2023, by way of a state $1.6 billion fiscal 2022 supplemental budget Baker signed. The bill also extends, through April 1, 2023, an emergency provision allowing restaurants to sell beer, wine, and cocktails to go.
“This is great news for our local restaurants and our community,” said Mayor Brodeur. “Many of our food businesses found their customers have embraced outdoor dining, and our expanded use of public spaces has deepened our sense of community here in Melrose.
Residents will have the opportunity to experience outdoor dining at the City’s upcoming Block Party taking place in Downtown Melrose on Friday, June 17, from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.
