Newton Free Library's Digital Newsletter

September is Library Card Month

You probably know the Newton Free Library offers so much more than books! Everyday we surprise Library visitors by introducing them to offerings they didn't realize were available through the Library.

September is Library Card Month - it's the perfect time to discover everything your card unlocks during our month-long celebration.

REFER - A - FRIEND

Over 43,000 Newton residents have library cards - we'd love everyone in the City to enjoy the Library!

Ask your Newton family members, friends and neighbors -

"Do you have a library card?"

Encourage them to sign up and come in to pick up their new card this month and you and your friend will be eligible for a special prize drawing.

We're competing with the neighboring libraries this month to sign up the most new Library card members. Spread the word and introduce someone new to the Newton Free Library!

Sunday Hours Return

Sunday hours return after Labor Day, starting Sunday, Sept. 11th.

We're open from 1-5pm on Sundays.

Welcome Families!
The newly renovated Children’s Room opened to the community on Thursday, August 4th. We began the morning with a heartwarming ribbon cutting with Mayor Fuller and enjoyed welcoming nearly 1,000+ young children with their families and caregivers explore the new room throughout opening day. Thank you to everyone who joined us for this remarkable celebration! Come visit the new room as you kick off the new school year.

And remember, children five and older are eligible for their very first library card!

Parking Lot

Construction Update

The sidewalk from Homer Street to the bench just before the pedestrian bridge to the Library's parking lot entrance will be paved Sept. 7-8th. If you park on Homer Street, please use the main Homer Street entrance on the brick plaza.

Construction continues on the Homer Street side of the parking lot. Work will begin to add new islands in the lot this month to aid with traffic flow. Parking is available around the perimeter and on the Cemetery side of the lot. Use caution, as traffic patterns in the lot to accommodate construction.

Zoning regulates how land in Newton can be developed and what kinds of new buildings are allowed. The City is collecting input on a set of proposed updates for the village center zoning.

Visit this exhibit to learn about zoning basics, history, and each proposed update. The exhibit will have discussion prompts to guide community members in their thinking and the City's Planning Department is eager to collect your input.

Explore the exhibit during regular Library hours -  click here for more information.

New Items added to the Library of Things Collection

We've partnered with Newton's Department of Public Works to expand our Library of Things collection through the State’s Recycling Dividends Program, which supports creation of local lending libraries for tools and other items.

This special collection features non-traditional library items for borrowing like puzzles, gameshousehold toolshealth and wellness equipmentmusical instruments and more so you can try before you buy, discover a new hobby or borrow a tool you’ll only need to use once.

You'll be amazed by how the Library can help you around the home!
