Jones Library : Black Lives Matter Book of the Week: Raising Antiracist Children:A Practical Parenting Guide by Britt Hawthorne with Natasha Yglesias

From: Jones Library
September 24, 2022

This timely guide stands out for its intersectional approach to parenting. Author Britt Hawthorne states in her introduction "Many of the parenting books out there focus on individualism-- in this book, I'm looking to focus on collectivism." Hawthorne is a nationally-recognized anti-bias and anti-racist (ABAR) educator and facilitator. The book is broken into 5 sections: deepening our understandings, healthy bodies, radical minds, conscious consumption, and thriving communities. Each section includes prompts for caregivers to reflect on their own experience, and includes language scaled to support children of different ages. By inviting other activists and educators to share their voices in these chapters, the book itself becomes a work of community led by Hawthorne's compassion. "Our community cultivates liberation when we're curious about who we are and the systems we uphold, and when we consider different possibilities and commit to change."
