Yes You Can: Lessons from New England's Trailblazing Women

New England has nurtured countless women who shook off the expectations of their gender to forge their own destinies. Patricia Harris's latest book, New England's Notable Women, shines the spotlight on 45 of these trailblazers and achievers and directs readers to homes and other sites in all six states where their stories come to life. In her talk, the author will discuss and show photos of some of these touchstone places and recount the lessons she has learned from her subjects. Among the heroines she will highlight are legendary socialite turned suffragist Alva Smith Vanderbilt Belmont; early champion of education equality Prudence Crandall; and pioneering astronomer Maria Mitchell, the first American to discover a comet. Patricia Harris will be signing books and books will be for sale.
About the Author
Patricia Harris and her husband David Lyon have written more than thirty books on travel, food, and art. Harris has a personal interest in exploring and celebrating women's place in the world. In addition to this title, she is also the author of 100 Places in Spain Every Woman Should Go (Travelers' Tales). She lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Women in Jazz

Women have been involved in jazz since the early 1920s, not just as vocalist, but as instrumentalists, composers and arrangers. An understanding of jazz would not be complete without highlighting the influence and contributions of women—women such as Bessie Smith, Valaida Snow, Mildred Bailey, Mary Lou Williams, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Sarah Vaughn.
The goal is to provide an understanding particularly of their personal lives, their ability to read music, perform and survive in a time when jazz was considered “a man’s world”. It also covers the full spectrum of years, genre, recordings, and recognized achievements. The lecture/performance includes the following:
- Program begins with a brief performance by Galen followed by:
- 60 minutes PowerPoint presentation with samples of artist's music
- Galen performs at certain intervals of the presentation
- 15 minute Q & A
