Department Of Public Works To Begin Restoration And Painting Of Public Library Exterior

The Department of Public Works will soon begin exterior restoration and painting of the Provincetown Public Library. The Town of Provincetown has contracted National Painting Service for this project. Work should begin in early June and wrap up by July 4th. Braden Witt the Facilities Manager at the Department of Public Works is managing this project for the DPW and is excited to see this project completed. Among the Facility Manager’s responsibilities is to protect and preserve our historic town-owned properties.

Last time the library was painted was around 2009, the effects of the New England weather has started to show. The DPW has worked with the Town Planner and Library Director to make sure the new paint color is true to the historic nature of the building. In 2009, Building Conservation Associates Inc. did an analysis of the building including the paint color. This is when they chose Sherwin Williams SW2446 Edelweiss. This color was accepted as the historic paint color for the Provincetown Library since it is a commercially available color that has a close visual match to the Munsell Color System: l0YR 4/6 color identified in the Building Conservation Associates paint analysis of trim pieces.

The Town has chosen to start this project in the late Spring to achieve the best adherence for the paint to the wood. The longer the freshly applied paint can bake in hot weather the longer the paint will last. The Sherwin Williams paint line we are using needs 30 days of above 50- degree temperatures to properly adhere and cure. There will be an impact to the parking next to the library on Center Street. The handicap parking space will remain in use throughout the project, but there will be no parking in the other 1-hour Library spaces. The book drop-off will remain in its current location as well.
