The Newburyport Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee wants all residents to know about two upcoming events around the Martin Luther King Day Holiday that will honor the legacy of the Civil Rights leader.

On Thursday, January 12 at 6pm, the Newburyport YWCA will present "Martin Luther King: The Art of Racial Justice." Artists from Elevated Thought in Lawrence will help audience members reflect on quotations from “The Trumpet of Conscience”, Dr. King’s last work. The artists will lead discussions sessions and will guide groups of attendees in creating art that reflects sentiments in the quotations.  They will combine all the art into one collage representing group reactions to the words of Dr. King. Come join this interactive and meaningful event at the Newburyport Senior Center, 331 High Street. Adults are $10 and students are free. For more information and to buy tickets, go here: https://www.ywcanewburyport.org/2022/12/martin-luther-king-celebration-thursday-january-12-2023/

On Sunday, January 15, 2023, the First Religious Society Unitarian Universalist Church in Newburyport will hold a program titled "Honoring our Black residents of the late 18th century to early 20th century." They will hold a worship service at 10:30 am followed by a presentation on Newburyport’s Guinea Village and the once-thriving Black community by local historian Ghlee Woodworth. This free event will take place at 26 Pleasant Street, Newburyport and the presentation should begin around 11:30am.
