If you’re a fan of jazz, you haven’t enjoyed it to its full potential until you’ve heard it live—or at the very least blaring from top-notch speakers in a club. If you’re from—or even if you’re just visiting—Massachusetts, rest assured you’ll find a jazz club that will make your evening out beyond worthwhile. Here are our seven favorites.
Featuring jazz greats including Tony Bennett and Winton Marsalis, Sculler’s Jazz Club is likely the best in all of Massachusetts. Check out the club’s monthly calendar to see who’s performing in the weeks to come.
Receiving high praise from Rolling Stone Magazine, Lizard Lounge in Cambridge features open mic night every so often in addition to an impressive roster of jazz musicians. The drinks and servers are exceptional—but the music is the real reason the patrons keep coming back.
Named one of the top 150 jazz rooms in the world by Downbeat magazine, Chianti Tuscan Restaurant and Jazz Lounge features the perfect mix of food and music. It’s a favorite of those who don’t feel like driving into Boston to hear good jazz.
Best known for their jazz brunch, Ryles Jazz Club hosts nationally known musicians as well as a few who make Massachusetts their home. Their dining options and private functions are highly praised, too.
Depending on the night the Back Page features jazz or comedy, as well as some good pub food—though they don’t want to be pegged as a restaurant. It is located in an old newsroom, which adds to its eclectic ambience. Enjoy live jazz four nights a week.
Also featuring a very popular jazz brunch, The Beehive was named one of the top 100 jazz clubs in the world by Downbeat magazine. Their nightly live music is available with no cover charge.
In addition to live music and great food, Nick’s Bar & Restaurant has a jukebox filled with the music of jazz greats from all eras. Check out their schedule of upcoming shows.
