Happy Black History Month!

February celebrates and recognizes the histories, cultures and achievements of African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Also known as African American History Month, the event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Over time the concept has expanded to encompass all of February as Black History Month. President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month in 1976, calling upon the public to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” This is the perfect time to learn about, reflect upon, and honor the stories of Black America and how those stories have helped to shape the course of history and culture.

Check out our displays throughout the Main Library for related recommended materials. You can also visit our Online Library, which is available 24/7, for ebooks, eaudiobooks, movies, television shows, music, and language-learning tools which feature collections honoring Black History Month! Additionally, join us for the second meeting of our Winter Wellness mini book club in which we'll be discussing Rest is Resistance by Tricia Hersey.
