INTRODUCTION TO PIANO

This course is meant to serve as a fun introduction to playing the piano! In this class, the fundamental basics of playing the piano will be explored. These include learning to read basic sheet music notation, and practicing matching such musical notes on a keyboard/piano. This skill will help with learning how to play scales and simple songs!
Classes are led by Suhrit G and Teja M from SHS, experienced pianists who are eager to share their love of music. Participants must bring their iPad with GarageBand installed.

YMCA YOUTH IN GOVERNMENT

Welcome to the Youth in Government program from the Boroughs YMCA! This comprehensive program is designed to empower teens with the knowledge, skills, and experiences necessary to understand and actively participate in the political process and governance at various levels. Through a series of engaging workshops, discussions, simulations, and practical activities, participants will gain a deep appreciation for civic engagement and develop a strong foundation for future leadership roles.

PLEIN AIR PAINTING FOR TEENS

En Plein Air - Painting Outside!
Come enjoy an introduction to the art of painting outdoors. Students will be given a brief lesson on the history and method of the practice and then brought onto the library lawn for a guided painting session (weather permitting). Materials will be provided.
This class is being presented by The Jazz Robot Studios, a local arts non-profit, and will be led by Jonathan Larkin. Jonathan studied painting and drawing at The School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and The Art Students League of New York in New York City.

SCARY STORIES IN THE CEMETERY

Imagine - a quiet, misty night, dark shapes of bare trees, a lone figure in black beckoning you to follow her into the cemetery. Time for scary stories! We'll meet at the Artemas Ward gate (behind the First Congregational Church) and walk amongst the graves, then settle in for some chilling tales in the dark. We'll bring cider and cookies, you bring a blanket to sit on.

STUDENTS TOGETHER OPPOSING PREJUDICE (S.T.O.P.)

The Students Together Opposing Prejudice (S.T.O.P.) program is a comprehensive initiative designed to foster inclusivity and combat prejudice among middle school students. Implemented over a seven-week period, this curriculum is facilitated by high school students who have undergone leadership training. The program employs an array of engaging games, activities, and peer discussions to instill in participants the ability to identify, challenge, and effectively respond to stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination. By nurturing a well-rounded understanding of diverse perspectives, S.T.O.P. empowers young individuals to forge meaningful connections with those who differ from them. The program aims to develop participants into future leaders and model citizens.
We are currently seeking enthusiastic middle school students to join our upcoming Fall 2023 cohort, as well as dedicated high school facilitators. High school students who volunteer as facilitators will accrue valuable leadership skills and earn volunteering hours, further enhancing their profiles. Middle school participants will gain interpersonal and communication skills, equipping them with the tools necessary to effectively combat prejudice in their communities.
