Virtual Talk - Imagine 2200: Climate Fiction for Future Ancestors

Wednesday, September 27th at 6:30 p.m.

Join Tory Stephens of Grist Magazine, an independent non-profit media organization focused on the climate crisis, and learn how he created Imagine 2200: Climate Fiction for Future Ancestors. Imagine is a storytelling initiative that calls for fiction writers to envision the next 180 years of equitable climate progress, imagining intersectional worlds of abundance, adaptation, reform, and hope. The initiative also seeks narratives that center solutions from the communities most impacted by the climate crisis, and stories that are rooted in cultural authenticity (a deep sense of place, customs, cuisine, and more) and rich subcultures that uplift traditions not often seen in mainstream literature. Over the course of three years the project has encouraged 3,000 plus writers from 91 countries to submit stories, and of which 700,000 people have read. Writers and readers alike will enjoy this climate justice romp.

About the Speaker: Tory Stephens creates opportunities that transform organizations and shift culture. He is a resource generator and community builder for social justice issues, people, and movements. He currently works at Grist Magazine as their climate fiction creative manager, and uses storytelling to champion climate justice, and imagine green, clean, and just futures. In another life he owned a kick-**** streetwear company, and he would have gotten away with eating the last cookie too, if it weren't for his three meddling kids.

Please call the library at 508-760-6219 to register. You will receive an email with the Zoom link.

Author Event: Janis Robinson Daly

Wednesday, September 27th at 6:00 p.m.

Author Janis Robinson Daly will discuss her novel The Unlocked Path, in which readers meet a “New Woman” of the 20th century: educated, career-minded, independent Eliza Pearson Edwards. In 1897 Philadelphia, after witnessing her aunt's suicide, Eliza rejects her mother’s wishes for a society debut, and at a time when five percent of doctors are female, she enters a woman’s medical college. With the support of a circle of women and driven by a determination to conquer curriculum demands, battle sexism, and overcome doubts, Eliza charts her new life path. Combining science and sympathy, she triumphs to heal others and herself.

This event will include a presentation discussing the book and a Q&A session with the author. Copies of the book will be available to purchase and be signed.

Please call the library at 508-760-6219 to register for this program.

September Art Display

Lyubina Raeva (Luba) was born in 1958 in Communist Bulgaria, a place where freedom of expression, including art, was suppressed at the time. Luba always wished to live out her artistic freedom and after the fall of the Communist regime, she moved to America to pursue her dreams. She moved to Cape Cod in 2010 where she took a position working in food service at Cape Cod Hospital. Luba started her painting during Covid as a way to artistically express herself and her feelings about the ever-changing world. Her work has significantly progressed and improved in the last year as she has learned different and more advanced acrylic poring and swiping techniques and has received great feedback from colleagues and other artists.

Luba has 2 children and 2 grandchildren. She travels to Europe frequently to visit her son in Germany, and she also travels back to Bulgaria to visit family. She spends her free time painting, gardening, and walking the beach. Luba says she gets a lot of inspiration from the beautiful beach sunsets and all the greenery on the Cape.

If interested in purchasing or viewing more of her artwork, please email Luba at Luba_Raeva@abv.bg
